The functional person probably keeps the refrigerator stocked but may not be able to get out of bed in the mornings to make breakfast for the kids. As long as there are good days, income and effort, the functional label persists. In our busy Michigan law practice we see countless different reasons for divorce. There are certain silent marriage killers like functional alcoholism and undiagnosed mental illness that can be somewhat more common than others. Self-help organizations, church groups, and 12-step programs like Al-Anon and Alateen offer advice, hope and encouragement to people involved with functioning alcoholics. High-functioning alcoholics will rarely admit that they have a problem. But if someone in your life has three or more alcoholic beverages per day (two or more for women), they are consuming more than the recommended amount. Dietary Guidelines define moderate drinking as one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. Binge drinking is defined as having four or more beverages in one drinking episode for women and five or more beverages for men (a typical drinking episode is around two hours).
